Due to a high demand for spaces in our school holiday activities, we are asking for families to just book their children into one activity to begin with, and go on the wait list for the others they are interested in. If, we do not fill up all the positions, then you will be rung and invited to fill any empty positions.

Wild Ways - Conservation Through Art

Till the 18th of January 2012, with the support of the Perth Zoo, the Rockingham Library Foyer will be home to some very imaginative art from primary schools around the Perth and country areas. This amazing display is allowing young people to communicate the importance of caring for precious ecosystems in Australia and Asia.

HYBRID - Challenger Art Exhibition

On display in our foyer is a variety of stunning artworks from the Certificate III and IV Visual Arts and Contemporary Craft students. These works have been developed throughout the year exploring different mediums across a number of disciplines including drawing painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and digital imagery. Also available to view will be collaborative and public art projects work in progress.

This includes:

• the sculpture entry for the 2011 Castaways recycled sculpture exhibition in Rockingham,

• the giant Pelican sculpture made from recycled materials commissioned by the City of Rockingham for their new Waste Education Centre,

• and the vibrant colourful mural adorning the East wall of J Block here in Rockingham.

Come down and enjoy this wonderful display of artwork. It really is a feast for the eyes.

The Challenger Art Exhibition is on until December 7th.

Tranby College Art Exhibition 2011

From October 24th to November 4th in our Library foyer is the amazing art and woodwork display of the very talented year twelve students from Tranby College.

Tranby College would like to invite you to nominate both an Artwork and a Woodwork piece from the Exhibition that is a 'stand out' for you. Nomination forms are provided and can be placed in the nominations box. The winners of the 'People's Choice Award' will be announce at the Graduation Ceremony in December held at the college.

On behalf of the Art and Woodwork students at Tranby College we hope you enjoy and feel inspired by the wonderful work on display.

Serenity Lodge Art Display

Seniors Week 2011

Seniors Week is a special time of celebration for Western Australian Seniors. During this week a large range events and activites are held across WA to celebrate the contribution of Seniors to the community.
This year, Seniors Week 2011, will be held from Sunday 6 November to Tuesday 15 November.
To celebrate our seniors Rockingham Regional Library has organised these events;
Thursday 10th - Come and enjoy Ormonde Waters speak on the Catalpa rescue and for more information about the Catalpa and the Fenians click here .

The Census is a survey of the people in Australia, their characteristics, and the places where they live. It is conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) once every five years and is an important planning tool for government. If you would like help completing the Census questions on a form or online, free help is available at Rockingham Library at the following times:

Family History Society Celebrate Census

The Rockingham Family History Society is actively involved in the Census 2011. Diane Oldman and Pam Cowgill, experienced genealogists, will be delivering two special presentations on the history of the census, the destruction of Australian censuses and what celebrities do on Census night.

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is about celebrating cultural diversity and Rockingham Library is proud to be a part of it. Rockingham Library has lots of books celebrating different cultures and this year we were able to share some of them with a group of students from Rockingham Montessori School who visited as part of their Harmony Day activities. While they were at the library they listened to Aboriginal Australian stories of the Dreaming including Tiddalik The Frog and When the Snake Bites the Sun. The students were enthralled by the stories they were told and really embraced the experience of being in the library.

Every year the Perth Zoo aims to raise awareness of conservation issues through the Wild Ways Conservation Art Project. As part of the project, banners are produced by Western Australian school children depicting our natural environments and beautiful wildlife. Dynamic works on display

The best work of the Challenger Institute of Technology’s arts students will be on display in the Library Foyer from 26 November to 1 December 2010. Paintings, drawings, ceramics, sculptures, prints, jewellery and photographs will be showcased in the exhibition entitled Insight. Art coordinator Shaaron du Bignon said that the exhibition features innovative and dynamic works and is the culmination of an exciting and highly successful year.

National Novel Writing Month

November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and the challenge for participants is to compose a 50,000 word novel between November 1 and midnight November 30, 2010.
To support this fun and stimulating event, Rockingham Library, in conjunction with Rockingham City Council is hosting a Nano Cafe day with a dedicated writing space, catered lunches and author talks. Photographic Series 2010

Photographic Art Series 2010 is showing in the Library Foyer until October 8,2010. The display features the work of the talented artists from the Community Art Room – a place where people with disabilities can express themselves creatively. The photographs, which were taken throughout Rockingham, Mandurah and Fremantle, feature dreamy seascapes, beautiful textiles and cheerful dogs. Photographic Art Series was made possible by the donation of cameras from the community, Rotary and Retravision as well as by the creative efforts of exhibition co-ordinator Evelyn Lim.

Children's Book Week 2010

Children’s Book Week is an annual event showcasing exceptional children’s books. This year the theme was Over the story bridge and to celebrate, Rockingham Library created visually stunning displays and organised activities for local children including tours of the Children’s Library. The highlight events were performances by the much-loved Patch Theatre. Students from Maranatha Christian College and Rockingham Beach Education Support Unit were treated to a lively and interactive version of Rumplestiltskin. Children from Hillman Primary School and the wider community viewed a charming adaptation of Billy Goats Gruff. The performances were enchanting and engaging and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Worlds next door - book launch

The official launch of a book for young people will be held in the Library on Thursday 19th August at 6.00pm. The function will be hosted by Hal Spacejock author Simon Haynes. Worlds next door is a collection of 25 stories edited by Tehani Wessely, written by a range of Australians from established to new authors. The theme of the stories are science fiction or as Tehani prefers "speculative fiction" and are aimed at a readership of between 9 - 13 year olds.

Storytime fun - Come and join us for some storytime fun. Wednesday 7th July at 10.00am or Thursday 8th July at 10.00am for Funny Face Biscuits. Then for some fun with mobiles Wednesday 14th July at 10.00am or Thursday 15th July at 10.00. Ages : Toddler to 7.

Hey want to join the whole of Australia to read the same book at the same time. Come into the Rockingham Library for National Simultaneous Storytime for pre-school children. It will be on Wednesday 26th May at 10.00 - the book we will be reading is "Little white dogs can't jump" by Bruce Whatley and Rosie Smith.
